Strengthening Maritime Security and Maritime Domain Awareness: MARSEC/MDA Training Empowers Sri Lankan Maritime Stakeholders

The recently concluded Maritime Security/Maritime Domain Awareness Mobile Education Training, held at the Regional Centre for Maritime Studies (RCMS), marked a significant milestone in maritime security and inter-agency cooperation in Sri Lanka. Delivered by four visiting experts from US Institute for Security Governance, the training brought together 26 participants from key maritime stakeholders, including the Ministry of Defence, Sri Lanka Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Customs, the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DFAR), Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA), and the Attorney General’s Department.

The program focused on enhancing expertise and fostering collaboration among these entities, reinforcing Sri Lanka’s capability to tackle complex maritime challenges. Participants engaged in specialised sessions that highlighted the best practices, technological advancements, and international frameworks for maritime governance.

The certificate-awarding ceremony underscored the significance of this initiative, with esteemed dignitaries gracing the occasion. His Excellency Rémi Lambert, the Ambassador of France to Sri Lanka, Rear Admiral Dammika Kumara, Vice Chancellor of the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU), Lieutenant Commander Ros Lary, Chief of the Office of Defence Cooperation at the US Embassy in Sri Lanka, and Captain (ND) Chamila Mendis, Director of RCMS, honoured the graduates with their presence, reaffirming the importance of cross-border cooperation in security and governance.
